Waiata Lodge, Queenstown Hill

Waiata is the Maori word for song, and provided the inspiration for this 6 suite boutique lodge with inbuilt recording studio on Queenstown Hill.  Our brief was to create a private setting for the lodge whilst retaining the stunning long range views to the hills and lake.

The lodge is situated on a steep site with extensive bedrock and limited naturally occurring topsoil.  Stacked rock walls were used to create planters to allow the tree and shrub planting.

The lodge architecture uses local stone and hardwood timber, and this is repeated in the landscaping, with flagstone patios, hardwood steps, local aggregate and schist planters.

The plant palette is predominantly native shrub species, with groundcover thyme used between the flagstone pavers on the patio, and ornamental trees with brilliant autumn colour used to punctuate the planting.
